Here are some performance ideas and info on the 87-90 NON HO engines

Non-HO

The non High Out put engines are the first 4.0 displacement engines, they were only available from 1987-1990 in XJs

They start out with 177hp at 4500rpm, 224lbft at 2400rpm, redline 5000rpm

This is a very good horsepower and torque rating, I think that it is better than the High Output, seeing as the Torque curve is almost 1600 rpms lower in the rpm band.this is best for 4 wheeling.

The changes came in the head:

It also was changed in the intake manifold, and the TB, the injection was also changed to Chrysler MPFI (multi port fuel injection) rather than Renix:

The Air Intake is mounted differently, it is bolted as opposed to clamped on, like the HOs Rustys Offroad, Turbo City, make bolt on air intakes for a Non-HO

The Renix Throttle bodies measure 52mm stock, with the opening in the manifold at 59mm, accurate power can turn your tb into a 59 mm throttle body. Jeepers and Creepers and turbo city make the bottom of the tb the same size as the intake manifold, but it isnt 59mm, the throttle plate is the same dimension (52mm) in these ones.

Header possibilities are basically the same for a Non-HO as a HO, Thorley, Borla, Pace Setter, and Clifford Performance

High-flow cats are also the same, however, I have not seen a o2 sensor equipped Cat on a Non-HO XJ, you can go with a Dynomax cat, a random technology cat, and a Carsound cat

Catback exhausts have unlimited possibilities, Borla, Dynomax, Rustys Offroad, Flowmaster, Gibson, turbo city all make high-flow tailpipes, plus Magnaflow and Ravin make high-flow mufflers

Injectors: These need to be dealt with when more horsepower is added, from things such as; lots of bolt-ons, forced induction or a stroker

For stock/modified 4.0 engines or stroker build-ups the following injectors can be installed. The flow rates are:

The '95 Jeep 5.2 ZJ/Dodge 5.9 injectors (Part no. 53030262) are rated to flow 24.6lb/hr at 39psi.

The selection of injector size will depend on the estimated horsepower output, brake specific fuel consumption BSFC (assume 0.5), no. of cylinders, and the injector duty cycle (assume 80% or 0.8). The formula is:

Injector size (lb/hr) = (horsepower x 0.5)/(no.of cylinders x 0.8)

 

Cooling:

Raidators: The best choice here is a gdi 3 core radiator, these can be had for cheap and make for a big decrease in running temperature

Water pumps: Flow kooler makes a good water pump for the 4.0 litre

Fans: Flexalite makes a fan that fits good in xjs (#110) and you can also put in a electric fan from a Chevy truck, as Dino did
