On this page I'll talk about the steps you should take in making a sweet offroad XJ/MJ

Suspension

When offroad, you dont always need a Lift Kit, take your XJ/MJ offroad and it'll suprise you how good offroad the XJ/MJ series really is.
However, if you are looking for some more clearance (for bigger tires) or more articulation, there are several easy steps to get the best our of your XJ/MJ:
Stage 1:
2" budget boosts, these dont really aid in anything but tire fitment, they normally come with a 2" spacer for the front coils and a 2" block or add-a-leaf for the rear.  You can fit up to a 30" tire without any trimming, if you trim a little you can get 31" tires on there (with the right offset-see the other section of this pager) if you trim enough to put some TJ (wrangler) fender flares or bushwhacker flares, or rustys offroad flares.
Stage 2:
3" lift kits, they usually come with shocks, 3" taller coils, and an add-a-leaf in the rear, some kits allow you to substitute with bigger leaf springs.  A 31" tire is reccomended, with slight rubbing, with fair trimming, you can run a 32" tire, and TJ flare (MAJOR trimming) you can run a 33/10.50
Stage 3:
4-5" lift
These can be made a variety of ways, or you can buy kits from companies such as rubicon express, rustys, or tomken.  They include all of the above and usually come with lower control arms, uppers are reccomended, but not necessary. 32's can fit with little trimming, 33's or 34's can go on with TJ flares
Stage 4:
6-7" lift
There are unlimited possibilities here, consder lca's, uca's, and a new track rod a minimum, a new drive shaft is usually necessary (unless you have a tcase drop, a sye (slip yoke eliminator) or the axle is rotated up a bit. I have seen 37's on this combo, but 33's can be fit with little trimming
Stage 5: 8-9" kits are expensive, but can be had for cheaper if creative when peicing together parts from other companies, 35" tires are regularly fit with little trimming, but 38"s can be fit with aftermarket flares or trimming

Engine/Rest of drivetrain

aaronflex1.jpg

The drivetrain is fairly stout for a stock vehicle, but you can enhance it from K&N filters, to 4.9 stroker kits, from trac-lok differentials (found stock in some offroad packaged Cherokees) to high pinion Dana 60 axles
See more about highperformance engine mods on this site or Dinos site (links)
Stage one (engine):
K&N drop in airfilter, a catback exhaust system, a good set of wires and plugs.
Stage two:
Bored throttle body, Throttle body spacer, high flow cat, header/downpipe, msd 6a, FMS 24# injectors, custom cone intake, jet chip
Stage three:
Ported intake manifold, ported/polished head, high performance cam
Stage 4:
4.5, 4.6, 4.7, 4.9 litre stroker motors, superchargers, Nitrous Oxide
Stage one (transfer case):
2 low kit from tera low, twin stick setup
Stage two:
4 low kit
Stage 3:
Atlas 2 4.3:1
Stage one (axles)
Limited slip, tracklok, ex locker, gearless locker (all detriot brand)
Stage two:

Detroit Locker, Warn full floating kit, moser 35 spline axle shafts
Stage four:
